Autoimmune Disease Warriors usually have a hard time getting out of bed. Many of us are stiff for 15 minutes or more after getting up. Stretching and movement can help with this. I start stretching before I get out of bed. I dedicate the first 15 minutes upon waking to doing slow stretch movements to lubricate my joints and expand and contract my muscles. Once I get up and start my day…I turn on a little music and start dancing.
Several studies of people with arthritis have found improvement in mobility and joint pain, as well as positive changes in depression, anxiety, fatigue and tension.
If you prefer to dance in a group setting there are several options including but not limited to:
Bollywood
Zumba
Belly Dancing
Hip Hop
Pole Dancing
Dance Fitness Tips:
Most importantly - know your limitations and don’t exceed them.
Start slowly
Don’t jump into any exercise full-throttle or you’ll pay for it the next morning and beyond.
Slow down the pace
Do the dance moves in half time and avoid repetitive movements. This will help prevent injury and straining joints.
Approach the instructor
When you sign up, tell her about any issues or limitations so she can provide modifications.
Check with your doctor
Before you start any exercise, get your doctor or physical therapist’s opinion. She may be able to recommend one type of exercise over another and provide additional modifications suited for you.
Last but not Least
Have fun. Choose what works for you and what makes you happy. Be kind to yourself and listen to your body.
I do this each morning in addition to dancing while cleaning, getting dressed and cooking.
Try stretching before you get out of bed in the morning. Make slow stretch movements for each major joint- your neck, back, hips, shoulders, elbows m, wrists and ankles. Even wiggle your toes and fingers. Do this for about 15 minutes before exiting the bed. You should find that you’re a little less stiff. Lubricating your joints and stretching those muscles goes a long way towards starting your day off on the right track.
Have a Fabulous Day.
